Sharni L Hardcastle Australasian Society for Immunology Annual Scientific Meeting 2014

Sharni L Hardcastle

Sharni Hardcastle is in the final year of her PhD at the National Centre for Neuroimmunology and Emerging Diseases, Griffith University on the Gold Coast, Australia. Sharni received First Class Honours for her research on the topic of immune markers in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) as part of this team. The focus of Sharni’s research is to encompass moderate CFS/ME patients as well as an important and overlooked cohort of severely affected CFS/ME patients who are housebound based on their severity of symptoms. Sharni’s PhD involved the use of flow cytometry to investigate a wide range of both innate and adaptive immune cells. This is the first research study internationally to have investigated both moderate and severely affected CFS/ME patients in a wide array of immune cells. Sharni has given oral presentations of her research at three international conferences and similarly presented posters to a number of international audiences. Sharni won the Empowering Young Women Award at the Gold Coast Women in Business Awards for her role in this cutting-edge research. Currently, Sharni has two first author publications, three first author publications in editorial review and is a co-author on five publications in peer-reviewed international journals. The significance of this research demonstrates that Sharni has well developed skills in experimental science, particularly in the field of immunology, enabling her to successfully accomplish important research goals.
